Inter Press Service (IPS) congratulates Desmond Brown, IPS correspondent in the Caribbean, on the award received during the third Regional Excellence in Agricultural Journalism Competition, 2013, organized by the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) and the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Co-operation (CTA).

This year’s competition drew scores of entries from across the Caribbean focusing on ‘Achieving Food and Nutrition Security through Regional Cooperation’.

A panel of judges from across the Caribbean adjudicated the entries and Brown was designated winner of ‘Excellence in Print Journalism’ in Jamaica.

Brown received a commemorative plaque and a cash prize from Guyana’s president Ronald Ramotar during the Awards Ceremony on October 9, 2013 at the Guyana International Conference Centre.

According to CARDI, journalism in agriculture has a crucial role in information exchange, awareness building and improving understanding of food and agriculture issues.

The Media Awards competition encourages journalists and producers to probe the challenges and opportunities for improving food and nutrition security in the Caribbean thus raising the level of awareness on the important role of agricultural research, training and rural development.
